Pack 118 had a terrific weekend biking the Virginia Creeper Trail! Sixteen Pack 118 scouts and adults biked the trail from Whitetop, VA to Damascus, VA - a total of 17 miles.
Time after time throughout the day our scouts and adults exhibited the scout spirit - resilience, determination, helpfulness, kindness, and bravery. Our youngest biker, who is only 6 years old and has only ridden a couple of times without training wheels, showed TERRIFIC resilience and determination as he biked the entire 17 miles. He took dozens of spills along the way, but he just kept getting back on the bike and continuing on! And did I mention that our camp chef (who, in reality, is a professional chef) made sure we ate like royalty! GO PACK 118!

Well I am WAY behind in updating our website, but that doesn’t mean that Pack 118 hasn’t had great stuff going on. January was a bit slow due to the fact that several of our families were in quarantine. We had to reschedule both our Pinewood Derby and our formal pack meeting for that month. In February, though, everyone was well again and Pack 118 came roaring back with a vengeance! Here is a recap of a few of our highlights from February: On January 29 and February 5 Pack 118 participated in the Mecklenburg County Council’s Scouting For Food drive. Scouting for Food is the largest single-day food collection event in Mecklenburg County. It is the number one council–wide “Good Turn for America” service project. In the event thousands of Scouts go door to door collecting non-perishable food items for our neighbors in need. Scouts from Troop/Pack 118 revisited their assigned territories to pick up the boxes and bags of food that families donated. We then delivered the food to the drop-off point at Trinity Presbyterian. The district reserves 2 tractor trailers for food collection, one of which is reserved entirely for Troop/Pack 118! 118 makes this event a priority, and on average 118’s efforts account for 10% of all food collected by all Troops and Packs in our district! Last year Troop/Pack 118 set a record of over 21,000 lbs of food collected in the 2021 drive. All food collected went directly to feed our neighbors in need through Loaves & Fishes/Friendship Trays network of food pantries located throughout Mecklenburg County. On February 12 Pack 118 held a combined Blue and Gold/Crossover Ceremony. The Blue and Gold banquet is the most exciting event on the Cub Scout calendar. It is the birthday celebration of Cub Scouting. Our Blue and Gold banquet was held in conjunction with our Arrow of Light crossover ceremony. During the meeting we recognized the achievements of our scouts over the preceding weeks, and most importantly we celebrated 4 scouts and 2 adult leaders in our Arrow of Light Den who advance up to the Troop. On February 26 we held our annual Pinewood Derby. This year we tried something a little different by holding a Black Light Pinewood Derby! Our cars were be painted in neon colors with glow-in-the-dark wheels. We turned out the lights and watched them go! Trophies were awarded for 1st and 2nd place at each den level. Parents, siblings also raced in the outlaw class. Pack 118 had a great time at the Country Days Corn Maze last week. Seventeen scouts and their families came out for an evening of hot dogs, refreshments, and s’mores before we all took on the challenge of the corn maze. Although we tried to navigate the maze as individual families, somehow most of us ended coming out in one large mass. That just goes to show how we work better together as a team.
Pack 118 had a great time at the Etowah District Cub-o-ree last weekend at Belk Scout Camp. We had 26 total scouts and family members attending and everyone had a blast! The scouts were able to enjoy a variety of activities including the BMX course, the archery range, the BB range, and an evening bonfire. The weather could not have been better for camping.
Hi Pack 118 families, and welcome to our new scouts and families and those who have expressed interest in Pack 118. Here are this week’s updates.
Russell Smith Cubmaster, Pack 118 Hi Pack 118 families. It was great seeing so many new faces on Tuesday evening. Each paid registration includes a FREE Camp Card with discounts at local vendors! * Mark your calendars for Oct. 15-17. For our fall camping trip this year Pack 118 has been invited to join Troop 118 for their camping trip to Blowing Rock, NC. I’ll provide more details on this as soon as I have them, including the cost and exact location. On August 21 Pack 118 held a day hike at Reedy Creek Park here in Charlotte. It was a fun morning and our scouts hiked over 3 miles. Several even earned their hiking sticks. Hi Pack 118 families, and a warm welcome to our newest families. Last week’s open house was a success! We were glad to see so many friends whom we haven’t seen much over the summer, and we were certainly happy to see new faces join us as well.
As you already know by now, this Tuesday, Sept. 7, we will start our 2021-2022 year with our first pack meeting. As we usually do, we’ll start off in the scout room with our opening ceremony, following which we’ll review our procedures, answer questions, make announcements, and take a look at our calendar for the coming year. After that, scouts, current pack council members, and scout parents will break off into separate rooms and organize the dens for the coming year. Eric, Jessica, and I have already discussed what the den makeup will probably look like, and from what we see we will likely have a combined Lion/Tiger den and a combined Wolf/Bear den, Webelos, and Arrows of Light. That may change in the coming weeks since I already know of a couple more families that will be joining us later this month. For now, though, here are a few events we have coming up:
