Well I am WAY behind in updating our website, but that doesn’t mean that Pack 118 hasn’t had great stuff going on. January was a bit slow due to the fact that several of our families were in quarantine. We had to reschedule both our Pinewood Derby and our formal pack meeting for that month. In February, though, everyone was well again and Pack 118 came roaring back with a vengeance! Here is a recap of a few of our highlights from February: On January 29 and February 5 Pack 118 participated in the Mecklenburg County Council’s Scouting For Food drive. Scouting for Food is the largest single-day food collection event in Mecklenburg County. It is the number one council–wide “Good Turn for America” service project. In the event thousands of Scouts go door to door collecting non-perishable food items for our neighbors in need. Scouts from Troop/Pack 118 revisited their assigned territories to pick up the boxes and bags of food that families donated. We then delivered the food to the drop-off point at Trinity Presbyterian. The district reserves 2 tractor trailers for food collection, one of which is reserved entirely for Troop/Pack 118! 118 makes this event a priority, and on average 118’s efforts account for 10% of all food collected by all Troops and Packs in our district! Last year Troop/Pack 118 set a record of over 21,000 lbs of food collected in the 2021 drive. All food collected went directly to feed our neighbors in need through Loaves & Fishes/Friendship Trays network of food pantries located throughout Mecklenburg County. On February 12 Pack 118 held a combined Blue and Gold/Crossover Ceremony. The Blue and Gold banquet is the most exciting event on the Cub Scout calendar. It is the birthday celebration of Cub Scouting. Our Blue and Gold banquet was held in conjunction with our Arrow of Light crossover ceremony. During the meeting we recognized the achievements of our scouts over the preceding weeks, and most importantly we celebrated 4 scouts and 2 adult leaders in our Arrow of Light Den who advance up to the Troop. On February 26 we held our annual Pinewood Derby. This year we tried something a little different by holding a Black Light Pinewood Derby! Our cars were be painted in neon colors with glow-in-the-dark wheels. We turned out the lights and watched them go! Trophies were awarded for 1st and 2nd place at each den level. Parents, siblings also raced in the outlaw class. |
