When do we meet?
We meet Tuesday evenings from September through May. Meetings begin promptly at 6:30 pm and conclude around 8:00 pm. Please be on time! Where do we meet? We meet at St. Stephens United Methodist Church located at 6800 Sardis Road. Our scout room is in the rear of the church located in the building across from the gym. What does my scout wear? Pack 118 requires a cub scout uniform shirt, neckerchief, neckerchief slide, hat, and belt. The pack will provide the 118 numbering for your scout’s shirt, shoulder/council strip and world crest. Uniform pants are optional. Blue shorts and pants with the blue shirt or khaki shorts with the tan shirt are acceptable. Uniforms are available at the Scout Shop located at 1410 East Seventh Street (704-333-5471) or the Carolinas Scout Shop located at 2121 Westinghouse Blvd. (704-583-2127). Please call ahead for business hours. Unless otherwise noted, scouts should wear this uniform to every Tuesday night meeting. This uniform is called Class A. Pack 118 also issues a pack t-shirt with our logo for each scout. These shirts are referred to as Class B’s. Class B’s are only worn on specific occasions. What are the different Cub Scout ranks? Kindergarten Lion Den (blue t-shirts) 1st Grade Tiger Den (orange uniform accessories) 2nd Grade Wolf Den (red uniform accessories) 3rd Grade Bear Den (light blue uniform accessories) 4th Grade Webelos (green/khaki uniform and plaid accessories) 5th Grade Arrow of Light (green/khaki uniform and plaid accessories) A child may enter Cub Scouts at any year listed above, regardless of age. As long as your child is of age they can join. Do I have to remain at each meeting with my scout? For the Lion (kindergarten) and Tiger (1st grade) dens, a parent MUST remain at the meetings with the scout. All other parents are strongly encouraged to stay and offer assistance to the den leaders. We would love for you to get involved! A common misconception is that Cub Scouts is a babysitting service. Make no mistake: if you are looking for a place to drop off your child with no additional commitments, Pack 118 is not the place for you. We are a family-oriented unit and we encourage all parents to engage in this experience with their children. What does it cost? A one-time fee of $25 is due upon joining Cub Scouts. Pack 118’s annual dues are $100. We collect this fee in February when the pack recharters. This fee covers basic dues, a subscription to Scout Life Magazine, and BSA insurance. For new scouts, dues are prorated according to what time of year they join Pack 118. If you are joining at the beginning of the school year in September, dues are $50. * Popcorn sales - Each fall the pack participates in the local Scouting Council’s fundraiser with Trail’s End Popcorn. Scouts have the opportunity to sell popcorn door to door with an adult, as well as sell at local businesses and other preset locations. Scouts are compensated with prizes. 33% of the sales go directly into our treasury for Pack 118 activities. * Friends of Scouting - Each spring families can contribute or pledge to contribute to the local Mecklenberg County Council to help fund camp operations and pay the cost of operating scouting in Mecklenberg County. Are parents expected to to help lead den meetings? No, but every parent should expect to assist the den leaders periodically to provide quality meetings. What is the difference between a pack meeting and a den meeting? Each Tuesday night meeting begins with the entire pack together for general announcements and an opening flag ceremony. This generally lasts 10 to 15 minutes. From this point the scouts break into den meetings with their respective ranks/grade level for activities, outings, etc. Usually 4 times a year we have a formal pack meeting, meaning we begin with a dinner prior to the dens leading the entire pack in opening flag ceremonies, skits, and songs. Achievement and adventure loops that the scouts have earned are distributed at these formal meetings also. Other months we may have special get-together nights or informal pack meetings where achievement and adventure loops are also awarded before proceeding to den meetings. Do we camp? Pack 118 has fall and spring camping trips as well as a winter Super Trip. These trips are organized to be family trips. The fall and spring trips are typically in campgrounds or camping areas that have running water, electricity, and showers. There is no primitive or backcountry camping for Cub Scouts. During the spring and fall camping trips we usually visit the mountains or the beach, although not always. In the past we have visited Charleston, SC, Appomattox Courthouse, VA, and the Virginia Creeper Trail. The winter Super Trip is not a camping trip and accommodations are arranged by the Pack 118 Committee. Past Super Trips have included the Georgia Aquarium, Winterplace Ski Resort, and the USS Yorktown. What volunteer opportunities are there for parents? Pack 118 is totally led by volunteers. We always need adults to become den leaders, serve as event coordinators, assist with registrations, help recruit new scouts, and more! Please get involved - this is your Pack! Where can I find Pack 118 online? Pack 118 has a website, a Facebook Page, an Instagram page, and a YouTube channel. Facebook: www.facebook.com/pack118clt Instagram: pack118clt Youtube: Cub Scout Pack 118 CLT How can we get information about pack events? In addition to social media, Pack 118 uses email and an online system called Scoutbook. Every family will be given a Scoutbook login to help track their scout’s progress. The system also gives the pack leaders the ability to send mass emails to the whole pack, individual dens, and leaders only. Generally there is a weekly email. New families should be entered and receiving pack emails by mid-September. Please let us know if you are not receiving emails for the pack. What are the other special events we can look forward to each year?
