We had a great camping trip this weekend at King’s Mountain State Park in SC. The state park is adjacent to King’s Mountain National Military Park, where one of the pivotal battles of the Revolutionary War occurred on Oct. 7, 17180. On that afternoon a force of American Patriot militia men - mostly Scotch-Irish farmers from upstate SC, western NC, eastern TN, and western VA - soundly defeated a contingent of Loyalist militia under the command of Major Patrick Ferguson. This effectively smashed the left wing of Cornwallis’ army, forcing him to retreat and regroup, and giving the Continental regular army time to organize and move south.
We spent several hours at the battlefield. Our pack enjoyed a documentary in the visitor center theater, and then our Webelos participated in a flag raising ceremony at the visitor’s center. The flag ceremony had special significance for us since one of our Webelos (and his Wolf den sister and Cubmaster Smith) are direct descendants of Col. James Williams, the highest ranking Patriot leader killed in the battle of King’s Mountain. Both monuments on King’s Mountain bear his name. Following the flag ceremony we were given a ranger-led tour of the battlefield. After breaking for lunch we were given a weapon demonstration of a militia musket by one of the rangers dressed in period attire. That evening we had a fun campfire program where the scouts enjoyed s'mores, jokes, and some humorous sing-alongs. Apologies to all of our parents who were subjected to endless repetitions of the Shaving Cream song all the way back to Charlotte. lol!
